Alexander Rosenfeld,  (1900-1995)

Alexander Rosenfeld, 1981, Palm Springs Life Magazine"There are 26 letters in the alphabet, eight notes on a musical scale and three primary colors. From such simplicity we get the works of Shakespeare, Chopin and Cezanne.

"To be fully human all our senses must work in perfect harmony - as a sensory palette - then life is a symphony."
   - Alexander Rosenfeld -

His lust for life might be moored in his early encounters with death. Twice the young soldier faced a firing squad and twice was spared. Then, determined to leave his native war-racked Poland, Third generation artist, Alexander Rosenfeld wrangled an exit visa - as Emmissary of Polish Art.

His portraits of cognoscenti painted in the rich style of the old masters established his reputation, as did elaborate murals for movies like The Ten Commandments and Cleopatra, made during his three decades in Hollywood. In 1964 he was awarded the commission to create a memorial to John F. Kennedy near the Palm Springs Municipal Airport.    ~Sharon Apfelbaum, Palm Springs Life Magazine~

A celebrity portraitist, Alexander Rosenfeld was born in Poland in 1900 and was educated at the Academy of Warsaw and the Academy of Art in Krakow, Poland. He was the son of noted muralist, Joseph Rosenfeld. Alexander began painting at the age of six and by the age of 21 had painted portraits of many prominent people in Poland.

He came to New York as an emissary of Polish art in 1922, and soon was painting portraits of New York and Boston's "Rich and Famous".

In 1929, the mother-in-law of studio magnate Samuel Goldwyn convinced Rosenfeld to move to California. He settled in Los Angeles and was soon doing specialized creative work for the motion picture industry including mural work on classic films including Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments, Juarez, and Lust for Life.

His private commissions included portraits of Helen Hayes, Katherine Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Errol Flynn, Bette Davis, Joan Fontaine, Sydney Greenstreet, Carolyn Jones, Vanessa Redgrave, as well as royal family members, Prince Mo-Ho-Din and Lord and Lady Cholmer Jones.
