First thoughts

By Taylor

When my dad, my sister, and I decided to write a book, I thought about all my favorite books. I thought about the books I have read so many times I could rewrite them word for word. I also thought about how, when I read those books, it’s almost like watching a movie in my head. Then I pictured someone reading a book that I helped write. That’s when I knew for sure I wanted to do it.

So we’ve been bouncing around some ideas for a while now. We know the basics of our story, like where it takes place, what the story is about, even how it’s going to end. A lot of discussion right now centers around where the story should start, what kinds of characters should be in it, and how to fill in the middle parts to make everything fit together.

We’ve hit a few obstacles, not because we can’t decide how something is going to happen, or even what is going to happen next. The obstacles have been logistical, like thinking of something really good, how this and that fit together, and then forgetting what we said by the time we got home. I mentioned bringing a tape recorder with us on our walks so we can refresh our memories later. My little sister volunteered to take notes on her cell phone, which helps us to keep moving forward.

Did we tell you this is a young adult fiction novel? More on that later. Amazingly, we’ve got a great story in the works.
